A “big one” is likely to hit Yucatan: hurricane specialist

“The last one that hit the peninsula was Wilma, but conditions are currently more favorable to see a phenomenon of greater caliber,” says security technician….

The water temperature conditions in the Atlantic Ocean, which increased by 1.8 degrees Celsius, as well as other factors such as the currents that come from Africa, make it increasingly likely that a maximum Category 5 hurricane will strike the Yucatan Peninsula, said the director of Hurricane Solutions, Rafael Ávila Solís.

In an interview with Punto Medio, he indicated that it was last year when the water temperature in the Atlantic Ocean increased, and they expect it to continue increasing during 2018, which together with the La Niña phenomenon and the wind coming from the area of Cape Verde Islands, is what generates mega-hurricanes.

“For many years we have seen that the phenomenon of El Niño has caused many major hurricanes in the Mexican Pacific, and now we are seeing these same conditions in the Atlantic, and we can not close our eyes to this. Thank God we were not touched by any of the 3 mega-hurricanes that occurred last year, but we must be prepared,” he said.

The director of Hurricane Solutions stressed that the “El Niño” phenomenon has caused many major hurricanes in the Mexican Pacific and now these same conditions are in the Atlantic. He recalled that the National Hurricane Center in the United States modified the risk forecast of the first tropical storm and formally the season has not even begun.

“The season starts on the first of June, but we see how a year ago there was a formation in November, and now we see one that is before the season. The reality is that the possibility that the Peninsula is hit by a strong  hurricane is growing,” he said.

Ávila Solís was in Yucatan to participate in the Construction Expo 2018, as director of the company Hurricane Solutions, which protects buildings and houses from this type of natural phenomena through a patented material and cables, and which is now in Mexico, mainly in areas where natural phenomena of this type are more likely to occur.

“The last major hurricane that hit the peninsula was Wilma, but conditions are currently more favorable to see a phenomenon of this caliber, so we must be alert and do what is necessary to protect homes and monitor the advisories of the authorities this season,” he recommended.
