COZUMEL, Q. Roo — The Municipal President, Pedro Joaquín, welcomed to this tourist destination the six thousand passengers of the largest cruise ship in the world, the “Symphony of the Seas”, property of the Royal Caribbean International cruise line, which docked for the first time at the island’s International Terminal.
During the welcoming ceremony, where he was accompanied by Darío Flota Ocampo, director of the Tourist Promotion Council of Quintana Roo, and Alicia Ricalde Magaña, general director of the Port Administration of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo), Pedro Joaquin declared that Cozumel endorses its leadership at national and international level, as a destination for cruises, with infrastructure to receive more than 10 thousand people — eight thousand passengers and two thousand crew members — as it is in this case with the largest floating hotel in the world.
“We are convinced of the tourist potential of Cozumel, to place it as one of the main destinations for cruises worldwide, therefore, we work in a coordinated manner with the Federal and State governments, in order to strengthen our port infrastructure,” said the Municipal President .
He also affirmed that they maintain a close relationship with the executives of the main cruise lines that visit the island, such as Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line, so that they continue to consider this holiday resort within their itineraries .
According to official information of the Apiqroo, from January to October of this year, Cozumel has received about 3.5 million passengers via cruise.
After a tour of the cruise ship, Pedro Joaquín delivered a plaque to the Captain of the “Symphony of the Seas”, Robert Hampstead, who thanked the Municipal President for his hospitality.
It should be noted that the “Symphony of the Seas” is operated by Royal Caribbean International and will remain on the island for 11 hours; from there, it will sail to the port of Nassau, Bahamas, to later return, this week, to Miami, Florida.
With 228 tons of weight and 362 meters of length, this ship is considered the largest cruise ship in the world; It has aquatic theater, ice rink, surf with waves of more than one meter, water park, games for children, among other entertainment, with a bar served by robots, the highest slide on the high seas and numerous dining options.
The captain of the ship, Miguel Pascual Guadarrama, was present at the event; the Captain Altitude pilot, Alfredo Rodríguez Fritz; the High Captain, José Ángel Suárez Vallejo and the port agent Israel Suárez Flores, as well as municipal and state authorities.
