Chichén Itzá master plan would relocate itinerant vendors

The proposal to modernize the Chichén Itzá Tourist Zone includes a substantive solution for street vendors and better experiences for visitors. The plan’s formulation included artisans, merchants and service providers…//

The result of more than four years of coordinated work to reconcile the visions of each group, the plan includes elements necessary to ensure that its execution continues in the next administration. It includes the creation of a modern, orderly and sustainable space for the sale of handicrafts, expansion of the parking lot and renovation of visitors’ and sanitary facilities.

The Yucatecan business community expressed its absolute support for this initiative, in a working meeting with the heads of the Secretariat of Tourism Development (Sefotur), Saúl Ancona Salazar, of the Board of Cultural and Tourist Services Units of the State (Cultur), Dafne López Martínez, and the delegate of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Eduardo López Calzada.

“It is a positive strategy and of great relevance for the site, because it considers hygiene issues, as well as more comfortable and adequate spaces for each person to do their job better,” acknowledged the leader of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) of the entity, Michel Salum Francis.

According to the architect Carlos Quesnel Moguel, creator of the project, the technical proposal gathers the necessary characteristics from the parking area. “The visual impact for the tourist will be clean, orderly, you can take a tour where you can fully enjoy the archaeological landscape; It also includes more and better health services for merchants and visitors upon their arrival,” he said.

In this way, finally the situation of the itinerant trade in Chichén Itzá, for which many possible solutions have been proposed for years, is resolved, since a commercial area will be built to house the artisans, who are currently scattered. It will be located at the end of the path of the archaeological zone and the design of its premises will allow the display of their products.

“This work will be reflected in better income for families that, directly or indirectly, live off this activity; it is about more than 600 vendors and producers, together with their assistants and laborers, with a total of 1,300 people, for whom these viable solutions have been proposed,” said López Martínez.
