Dog fights would result in jail time for organizers and spectators in Yucatan

The organizers, owners of the premises and even the spectators of dog fights in Yucatan would face prison sentences of 1 to 5 years, according to the cause for which they have been linked to the process, says the opinion that was approved this week in the Commission of Justice and Public Security in the State Congress.

The initiative to reform the Penal Code of Yucatan was presented by the PRI deputy, Celia Rivas Rodríguez, and unanimously endorsed by the members of the Commission, which is presided over by Deputy Daniel Granja Peniche.

“What was clear is that we do not want dog fights in Yucatan,” said Granja Peniche, when the vote was unanimous.

The ruling modifies Article 140 of the Yucatan Penal Code to explicitly prohibit dog fighting in the state, regardless of whether the activity is done for profit or not.

“Anyone who is involved in these blameworthy events may be sentenced to 1 to 5 years in prison and fines of 200 to 400 units of updating measures (UMA),” said Celia Rivas.

“Respect for animals is not a fad or a concession. It is, rather, a responsibility that we as humans have towards the other living beings that inhabit this planet with us,” she added.

She indicated that organizations defending animals, mainly those of dogs and cats, were taken into account, since the main thing is to prevent those activities.

“It’s not that there is a proliferation of dog fights, but we have reports via the animal care associations, that there are events of this type in Mérida and other municipalities, especially those with a high population, so we want to set a precedent so that nobody promotes animal abuse,” said the PRI legislator.

On behalf of the PAN, the deputy Marco Antonio Novelo Rivero stressed the need to curb this type of activities, since animals must be protected, rather than expose them to such acts, which are clearly violence.

“It is important for everyone, since we live in times that can manifest any type of activity against animals, so we must applaud that any type of attack against the life of animals is sanctioned today,” he concluded.
