Researchers probe underground sanctuary beneath the Chichén Itzá pyramid

The Mayan remains do not cease to amaze us. On Monday, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) announced in conjunction with National Geographic (NatGeo) the results of a collaboration agreement that had the objective of exploring and investigating the “underground sanctuary” in the Chichen Itza archaeological zone.

What was that discovery about?

It was the archaeologist Guillermo de Anda who revealed the discovery of a sacred aquifer universe on which rests the main building of Chichén Itzá, the city built “on the edge of the well of the Itza.”

“The designation of Piña Chan has always been preferred because it focuses, as we do, on water as a critical resource. This importance is not difficult to perceive. Ignacio Marquina documented that the main pyramid of the site, the Castle (better known as the Kukulkan pyramid) is aligned between two cenotes: the Sacred and the Xtoloc. The interest of the GAM in Chichén Itzá arose from the work in the Cenote Holtún,” says an article written by researchers Guillermo de Anda, Karla Ortega and James E. Brady in the Mexican Archeology magazine.

About the works presented this Monday, the results are given after the INAH signed an agreement with the Virtual Wonders organization led by NatGeo explorer Corey Jaskolski months ago. The works that GAM has been developing since 2017 are also intended to verify the existence of a cenote under the Kukulkan pyramid.

“The verification of the existence of a cenote under the Castle, in the axis mundi of the site, is a high priority,” say the specialists.

If the hypothesis is confirmed, earlier dates could be provided in the chronology of Chichén Itzá and shed light on the periods of occupation of the Mayan city.
