Tabasco commemorates Spaniards’ arrival 500 years ago

VILLAHERMOSA, Tabasco — With the raising of a flag, a tribute, unveiling of a bust and a commemorative plaque, state and federal authorities celebrated on June 8 the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Juan de Grijalva de Cuéllar to Tabasco, celebrations that they called: “Encounter of two worlds”.

One of the most representative events took place at the Olmec and Maya Culture Research Center, in the city of Villahermosa, where the state governor, Arturo Núñez Jiménez, accompanied by Miguel Utray Delgado, counselor and director of the Cultural Center of the Embassy of Spain in Mexico, and Antonio Crestani, general director for Cultural Liaison of the Ministry of Culture, unveiled the bust of Juan de Grijalva de Cuéllar and the commemorative plaque of the Quincentennial.

They recalled that the expedition of the Spanish navigator has been stored in the memory of humanity as the search for the unknown and the discovery of new horizons, without suspecting that his visit would forever change the destiny of both worlds.

Núñez Jiménez recalled that this expedition of 500 years ago “marked the beginning of the history of our country, we can even affirm with real pride that Mexico started in Tabasco”. Crestani said that those events preceded the arrival of Hernán Cortés to Mexico via Veracruz and defined the course of the Nation.

The bust of Juan de Grijalva de Cuellar, was placed looking towards the Grijalva river, that crosses Villahermosa, and added a piece of the enclosure made with volcanic lava. The base has two forms: the rustic one that represents the ancient culture and the polished one of the European culture, according to its author, the artist Tomás Mejía.

As part of the celebrations, in the port of Frontera, where Juan de Grijalva entered Tabasco lands, a commemorative plaque was unveiled with the legend in Spanish and yokot’an: “The best land on which the sun shines (Ni pitsi kejiba ka ‘ni kin chiktan) “.
