Water agency denies that Merida tap water is contaminated

Responding to accusations made by the Ciudadanos Hartos (“Fed Up Citizens”) Association that the water distributed by Japay (water company) is contaminated with organic matter, Japay’s director, Manuel Carrillo, assured that the agency complies with all the regulations to guarantee the quality of the vital liquid.

He pointed out that the purification processes are certified by external laboratories and that Mérida has 32 wastewater treatment plants, in whose operation more than 7 million pesos are invested per year.

With supporting documents, the state official said that, contrary to what Ciudadanos Hartos association says, the Japay does not extract water from cenotes or the water table, but extracts it at a depth of 40 meters.

He added that the Japay does not regulate the quality of potable water in the municipalities but only provides technical advice to the municipalities that request it.
