Complaints allege mangrove “eco-cide” in Ría Lagartos Nature Reserve

An anonymous report backed by several photographs alleges a “mega-ecocide”, with devastation that would have occurred from road building in mangroves in the San Felipe-Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, in eastern Yucatan.

According to the complaints, they are causing irreversible damage with apparent knowledge of the municipal, state and federal authorities, who are presumed to be aware, so they minimize the issue.
The complainants stated that more than 2,000 square meters of mangroves from the San Felipe-Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve were cut by people who claim to have an alleged permit from the City of San Felipe, presided over by Mayor Juana Baltazar Santos. It was reported that this action allegedly has the approval of the trustee Felipe Antonio Marrufo López, known in the area with the nickname of “Catarino”, thereby contravening federal laws and agencies such as Profepa, which should regulate and supervise this type of actions.

The residents of that port mention that this atrocity is supposedly for the construction of streets, commenting that Felipe Antonio Marrufo López has indicated that since they are owners of these lands they can do whatever they want, with the justification that “after all the mangrove is recovered”.

“It is truly worrying and outrageous that in the municipalities of the interior of the state are being given this type of attacks against nature, as is the case of Homún, since these damages cause greater damage not only for the inhabitants, but for all inhabitants of the state, even the country, and our environment can never recover from these catastrophes,” cites the document sent to ACOM news service.

Finally, the complainants called for the intervention of the corresponding authorities who have the task of safeguarding these protected areas; as well as the sum and the support of the citizenship together with the media, who with the diffusion of the subject can help this stop this alleged ecocide.
