Foreigners arrested for vandalizing archeological pieces in Tabasco

Officers of the State Preventive Police detained two individuals from Indonesia, who damaged  15 archaeological pieces of the La Venta Museum Park, this being the third time that this cultural heritage is affected by vandalism.

The two foreigners, of Indonesian nationality, were touring the La Venta Museum Park, specifically in the archaeological zone. During their journey through the site they damaged pieces by spraying them with a liquid oil, accounting for a total of 15 damaged archaeological pieces.

Surveillance personnel of the La Venta Park Museum received citizen complaints and contacted the State Police to arrest the subjects.

The Ministry of Public Security responded and detained Alexander “N”, 40, and Abraham “N”, 28, both foreigners, who were put at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (PGR) to determine their legal status.

The delegate of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Juan Antonio Ferrer Aguilar, explained that the damaged pieces are being reviewed by two archeologists of the institution and specialists will come this week from Mexico City to clean the pieces. He noted that the amount of damages has not yet been determined.

Some of the pieces on which the Indonesians poured oil are: Basalt Columns, El Trono, La Abuela, El Viejo Guerrero, La Inconclusa, Foursquare Altar, The Altar of the Children, The Ruler, Altar de los Tecolotes, Monkey Looking at the Sky, without the severity of the damage being determined so far.

The park continues to operate normally.
