PROGRESO — In the sanitary landfill, an inadequate handling of garbage is employed, since the two pipes through which the leach fluid must pass are “plugged” with waste, so it reaches the water table directly, municipal authorities commented.
The landfill has two tubes through which must pass the leachate, decomposed juices of the waste, but instead of going to a pool-like area, whose purpose is to absorb those liquids, they stay in the area of the tubes, which causes great environmental damage.
To this is added that the collectors throw the waste anywhere, not in the final destination, and this creates an unhealthy environment, where carrion birds and dogs abound, officials noted.
Likewise, the problem of burning garbage continues to affect the area.
After the lawsuit filed in 2013 regarding the irregularities presented in the Progreso sanitary landfill, the investigations included the declaration of former public officials, both directors of coordinators of the administrations of Reyna Quintal Recio, María Esther Alonzo and Daniel Zacarías, in order to determine the guilty. But despite the obvious damage, the lawsuit remains stalled and without any sign of moving forward.
Meanwhile, in the place designated as the site of final disposal of garbage produced by the port, the measures established by NOM-083-Semarnat-2003 are flagrantly infringed, since all the waste is found in the open, without the minimum safety measure and emitting different gases from the decomposition of organic material such as methane. Smoke is emitted from the burning that has consumed part of the mountain of garbage that is located on this site.
