The municipal president of Puerto Morelos, Laura Fernandez Piña, highlighted the coordinated work between the three levels of government and society in general to overcome the “nightmare” in which thousands of tons of sargassum from the sea was deposited on beaches.

“The sargassum is a nightmare for the whole state, but in Puerto Morelos we fight it with the support of all the collaborators of the municipality. All, regardless of hierarchies, from general directors, secretaries, police, firemen are added to the tasks of collecting this algae, which we also had the support of hoteliers who do their part,” he said.

In Isla Mujeres, Kerem Pinto Aguilar, head of the Municipal Directorate of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), explained that the work that took place over several days to remove the sargassum brought by the Hurricane “Michael” weather phenomenon to two beaches on Isla Mujeres, allows them to be clean for this weekend.

He assured that at this moment, Playa Centro is 100% free of sargassum, while in Playa Norte cleanup work continues, being 95% free of this algae.

For his part, Fernandez Piña emphasized that he worked intensively to overcome the contingency, so that the beaches look clean and that in this enormous effort highlights the work of all collaborators and employees of the City.

“We destined more than 80 thousand man hours in the cleaning of our beaches,” he said. He also stressed that in those tasks he was assisted by leaders and students of Leona Vicario, taxi drivers, businessmen, fishermen and service providers concerned about the image of the destination.

Fernández Piña recalled that during this contingency there were days when up to 200 tons of sargassum were removed daily, which speaks to the magnitude of the problem faced in Puerto Morelos.

“But today we are better prepared, we will not be taken off guard by the arrival of the marine plant,” he said.
