Yucatan public safety ranked highest in Mexico in 2017: survey

Global Peace Index indicates state compares with safest places in the world ….

Yucatán is the most peaceful state in Mexico after occupying, for the second consecutive year, the first national ranking in that area, according to the most recent report of the Mexico Peace Index (IPM) 2018.

This study is based on five indicators: intentional homicides, crimes with firearms, violent crimes, unjustified detentions and organized crime.

According to the 2018 Peace Index, Yucatan once again stood as the most peaceful in Mexico, and only seven entities managed to improve in 2017.

The report also points out that Yucatan in particular has the lowest homicide rate in the Republic, and that the combined rate of robbery, assault and rape was reduced 23 percent during the past year.

The IPM is based on the methodology of the Global Peace Index, published annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) since 2007. It is also part of a series of Indices of National Peace, together with the Peace Indices of the United States and the United Kingdom.

Therefore, it is a study used by governments, academic institutions and non-governmental and international associations such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank, as well as national bodies such as the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO).

According to the IPM, Yucatán presented a score of 1.167 on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 reflects “absolute absence of violence or fear of violence,” and 5 represents “absence of peace and tranquility.” During the last edition, the entity reached 1.239, so the positive trend of the rating means that the state continues to be consolidated as the most peaceful in Mexico.

Comparing Yucatan’s numbers with those published by the Global Peace Index corroborates that it has levels similar to those of the more tranquil countries of the planet.

Iceland, New Zealand, Portugal, Austria and Denmark are the nations that occupy the top positions of the 2017 Index. The Yucatan score would place it in the second place in the world, below Iceland (1.111 ) and above New Zealand (1.241).

Since the beginning of the Government of Rolando Zapata Bello this indicator has improved from 1.38 in 2013, 1.29 in 2015 and now 1.167 in 2018, while in the eight years prior to the current administration (2004-2012) it had kept stable.

The results of the IPM 2018, as well as data on public security, show us that Yucatán is an entity characterized by harmony and security, and this trend is maintained in the short, medium and long term.

Meanwhile, Yucatan posted the lowest records in high-impact crimes nationwide during the first two months of 2018, according to Traffic Light Reports….

Yucatan continues to stand out as the safest state in Mexico, over the 31 others, with the lowest records in high-impact crimes nationwide in the first two months of 2018, according to the organization Semáforo Delictivo (Crime Traffic Light).

As in the last quarter of 2017, the reports for January and February 2018 indicate Yucatan maintains satisfactory safety indexes that present it as one of the entities where the inhabitants live with greatest confidence and in a climate of peace. This is supported by the statistics of the civil organization chaired by Santiago Roel Rodríguez, which is based on the official figures of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.

In the most recent Crime Traffic Light analysis, which appears on its website, through February, Yucatan added seven green lights from a total of 11 classifications, as it had the lowest impact values of all Mexico in the categories of homicides, kidnappings, extortion, theft of vehicles, homes and businesses, injuries and rapes. Likewise, three new items were added: drug dealing, family violence and femicides, in which there is no red light.

The data as of Wednesday February 28 show that in the territory four malicious murders were reported and no cases of kidnapping or extortion. On the other hand, 30 vehicle thefts were recorded and 18 businesses robbed. In addition, there were 28 proceedings for injuries and eight for sexual assault. Among the new rankings, that of family violence recorded 166 cases; no femicide, and 16 cases linked to drug dealing.
